Vietnam pop star rocks YouTube worldwide with mega-hit featuring Snoop Dogg

After six hours of release, the 25-year-old Vietnamese pop star’s latest music video (MV) leaped to No.1 among YouTube Trending videos in Vietnam.

Son Tung MTP’s newly released music blockbuster “Give it to me” (Hay Trao Cho Anh) featuring gangsta rap pioneer Snoop Dogg and European model-singer Madison Beer has set a number of records on the video sharing platform YouTube across the world since its premiere on July 1. However, it is still criticized as “old-style” and “half-baked.”

Near-unimaginable records far surpass V-pop boundary
After six hours of release, the 25-year-old Vietnamese pop star’s latest music video (MV) leaped to No.1 among YouTube Trending videos in Vietnam.
Until 8 a.m on July 2, the MV attracted over 12 million views adding to 1.2 million likes and 170,000 comments on Google’s platform.
On the international stage, “Give it to me” has jumped to top 2 of YouTube Trending videos in Canada, top 9 in the US, top 5 in South Korea and top 14 of global YouTube Trending videos.
The figures were recorded by METUBE, updated via YouTube’s Analytics Realtime.
Especially, the latest MV of Son Tung MTP, which marked his comeback after a dormant year, has become the world and Asia’s most viewed YouTube MV in 24 hours.
Besides, after 2hours and 49 minutes, the MV also achieved 1 million likes in the shortest time ever on YouTube Vietnam, surpassing all V-pop MVs in the history and just behind the Korean girl group BlackPink’s MV “Kill this Love” and the US’ Ariana Grande “Thank u, next” on global YouTube.
Criticism
“Give it to me” is a super-high cost music project that was prepared and made in one and a half year by the pop star.
The MV was filmed at some scenic destinations in the US namely Joshua Tree National Park in California, Hoover dam in Nevada, among others, which is also the concepts in some world-famous artists’ MVs.
Billboard described the MV as a “blend of reggaeton, tropical house, and hip-hop elements, creating a vibrant tune for the summer” with the joins of two celebs Snoop Dogg and Madison Beer.
Additionally, the US online news The Source also called Son Tung MTP the Asian sensation and highly valued his effort in making the captivating visual. The Source also predicted that the MV by Vietnamese pop star teaming up with US rapper might garner huge profit in the coming time.
Despite the pricey investment in the MV, Son Tung MTP still got some opposite comments on YouTube and its “human nature”.
Duong Do account, who self-proclaimed as Son Tung’s fan, expressed his disappointment about the latest hit.
In the MV, Son Tung shows up with luxury outfits, pricey cars and hangs out with Snoop Dogg and some hot chics on a pimped trawler boat that made my mood down, Tuoi Tre News quoted Duong Do as commenting on YouTube.
According to this account, the trawler boat is rebuilt from a monohull offshore fishing boat with spacious compartment, but its look does not glitter and fit in the concept as it is not a kind of luxury yacht.
The smoking scenes of the US legendary rapper is also pointed out as the minus point of the MV as they go against the green living that the whole world is going toward. Viewers also blame the MV for too much product placement and unclear lyrics.
The comment triggered a series of arguments among Son Tung’s fans and anti-fans on YouTube.
