Hanoi wants continued WB support for public transport

In the period of 2016-2020 and the coming time, Hanoi always focuses on developing the urban transport system.

Hanoi wants the World Bank (WB) to support for development of the remaining bus rapid transit (BRT) lines, as well as expanding the capital’s public bus system.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung made statement while hosting WB Vice President on infrastructure Makhtar Diop in Hanoi on February 20.

Chung highly valued the WB’s financing in the capital’s useful projects in recent years including those on resettlement, BRT and other transport projects.

In the period of 2016-2020 and the coming time, Hanoi always focuses on developing the urban transport system. Accordingly, the city will allocate a 32% of its budget for transport infrastructure investment and mobilize private funding and ODA, Chairman Chung added.

He mentioned some of Hanoi’s targets on urban transport development, including the optimization of existing bus lines to ensure efficient operation, investment increase in major roads and belts. In addition, Hanoi will invest in key transport infrastructure such as BRT and urban railway.

Chung also requested that the WB will support Hanoi in water resources management and wastewater treatment, which are the capital’s key tasks and must be accelerated to improve its residents’ living standards.

For his part, Makhtar Diop appreciated Hanoi’s goal of improving its residents’ living standards and its competitiveness.

He said that for the past time, the WB actively partnered with Hanoi to develop urban transport system, with prospective projects such as BRT and urban railway.

The WB leader expressed that his organization is willing to keep supporting Hanoi in the above-mentioned projects, as well as expanding cooperation in water resources management and wastewater treatment.
