The Vietnamese government requested ministries, branches and localities to continue strictly enforcing provisions of traffic law, promoting projects on traffic safety and easing traffic congestion.
The Hanoi People's Committee has issued a directive on ensuring traffic safety and easing traffic congestion for the period of 2019-2021.
After 10 years of implementing the Vietnamese government’s resolution on reducing traffic congestion, Hanoi's traffic safety has improved, road accidents have steadily declined in terms of both the number of cases and the number of casualties.
Specifically, after reaching 11,349 in 2011 across Vietnam, the death toll of road accidents fell to less than 9,000 people in 2014 and 8,279 people in 2018. Traffic congestion on main routes has been gradually eased given the number of vehicles increased rapidly, far exceeding the speed of infrastructure development and public transport capacity.
Despite positive results, there are still a number of shortcomings and limitations in ensuring traffic order and safety, preventing traffic congestion. Therefore, the Vietnamese government requested ministries, branches and localities to keep strictly enforcing provisions of traffic law, promoting projects on traffic safety and easing traffic congestion.
In order to properly implement the direction, the Hanoi People's Committee assigned the Department of Transport to coordinate with the Departments of Planning and Investment, Finance, Construction, Education and Training, Planning - Architecture, Justice, Health, the city’s Police, the People's Committees of districts, towns and related units to study, propose, report and draft plans to implement the Hanoi People's Committee’s resolution in March, 2019.
