Hanoi to ban smoking at 30 tourist sites

The smoke-free areas are those usually receive a large number of visitors daily including Ngoc Son Temple, Ba Kieu Temple, Quan Su Pagoda, Ba Da Pagoda, National Historical Museum among others.

Hanoi has piloted tobacco-free tourism at as many as 30 tourist sites in Hoan Kiem district including historical heritages and places of cultural interest.

Accordingly, the smoke-free areas are those usually receive a large number of visitors daily including Ngoc Son Temple, Ba Kieu Temple, Quan Su Pagoda, Ba Da Pagoda, National Historical Museum, Museum of Revolution, National Library, The Hanoi Opera House, St. Joseph's Cathedral, the Memorial House of Ho Chi Minh, and Thang Long Water Puppet Theater, among others.

The smoking ban in the aforementioned tourist spots in Hoan Kiem has been effective since this October. As a result, “No Smoking” and “No Cigarette” signs will be displayed in the premises and those who are caught smoking in these places will be fined.

Besides, Hoan Kiem also establishes smoke control areas in other 12 restaurants and 11 hotels in the district.

In 2017, Hoan Kiem district rolled out an initiative on food safety and tobacco ban which engaged 92 tourist facilities including restaurants and 3-star hotels. In 2018, another 89 facilities joined the initiative.

According to current regulations, people who are caught smoking at the smoke-free area will be fined from VND100,000 (US$4.3) to VND300,00 (US$13) while those who light a cigarette at a restaurant without the no-smoking sign will be fined VND3- 5 million (US$129-US$216).
