RMIT University to represent Vietnam at HSBC Business case competition

Competing against two other finalists, The Outliers team from the RMIT University Vietnam emerged as the new champion of the HSBC Business Case Competition Vietnam 2018, taking home VND50 million (US$2,200) in cash and the championship trophy.

The winning team from the RMIT University Vietnam, included Nguyen Hoang Yen Khanh, Luu Thai Quang Khai, Tran Vo Thanh Tu and Rahul Ravindranath who will all now represent Vietnam at the regional finals in Hong Kong from 5-8 June 2018.

This year, HSBC Vietnam partnered with the Junior Achievements Vietnam to organise the HSBC Business Case Competition in Vietnam which is the local round of the HSBC/HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition. The competition provides students the opportunity to foster analytical thinking, creativity, innovation, communication and presentation skills, all are valuable assets for them when they enter the workforce upon graduation. Since 2008, the business case competition has been developed by the renowned Asia Case Research Center of the Faculty of Business and Economics, the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the region's largest producer of business cases and over the years. The competition has reached 600,000 students from 130 universities across the world participating in the competition and 800 business executives across 12 countries volunteering as judges.

The local competition saw a total of 48 students from 10 Vietnam's universities competing in business strategy-making and presentation to earn a spot to compete in Hong Kong against students from top universities in Asia Pacific. After a final round featuring three high-quality presentations from two teams from RMIT University Vietnam and one team from the Foreign Trade University (Hanoi), the judges of HSBC Business Case Competition had to consider very hard to choose an outright winner. Finishing behind the Outliers team as runners-up were Revolution from the Foreign Trade University (Hanoi) and #WonderKids from RMIT University Vietnam. Teams were given an unpublished business case developed by HKU, which needed to develop a solution and implementation plan for the case and prepare a presentation of their solution within three hours. The solutions were presented to a panel of judges followed by a 15 minute question and answer session.  

"I would like to congratulate the winners and all of the runners up for a very exciting final. The judges were all highly impressed with each of the teams' analysis and the clarity of their arguments," said Pham Hong Hai, CEO and Chairman of Corporate Sustainability Committee of HSBC Vietnam. "I believe every team participating in this year's competition have gained valuable experience that will give them great confidence when they start their careers."

The Regional HSBC - HKU Asia Pacific Business Case Competition will be held at the University of Hong Kong with 24 teams from regional universities pitting their wits against each other to try and land the champion's prize of US$10,000. "It's an amazing chance to meet, and compete against, the top students from right across Asia and impress over 80 senior business executives serving as volunteer judges. I really hope the Vietnam team will represent Vietnam well and have the chance to win" added Hai. 

By creating a platform that encourages employment-focused skills development in the community, HSBC aims to assist young generation to fulfil their potentials. HSBC Business Case Competition engaged both HSBC Vietnam staff and our corporate clients to share their career experiences, knowledge and skills with students in Vietnam so that these talented and capable students can thrive in an international arena and excel in their future careers. 

The HSBC Business Case Competition is one of many HSBC projects that aims to increase levels of employability and financial capability in accordance with the bank's latest Environmental, Social, Governance report released in early April 2018. Recent related projects include the JA More than Money for 50 students of SOS Village Go Vap and Maker Academy project, bringing advanced learning method of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to 250 orphans in Ben Tre, Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City.
