Hanoi organises countdown events to welcome New Year 2017
On December 31, Hanoi hosted two countdown events to welcome in the New Year 2017, one at August Revolution Square, with the participation of the orchestra from the Vietnam National Academy of Music, and another event at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square with the participation of several renowned international DJs.
According to the city's authorities, many roads near Hoan Kiem were closed to vehicles on Saturday (Dec. 31) for the countdown party to usher in the promising New Year. Only emergency vehicles and the police can access the roads during the closures.
This year’s celebration was broadcast live on VTV1 channel starting at 9:45 p.m. Featured singers headlining this year’s celebration include My Linh, Phuong Uyen among others.
The special guest of honour is marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh who won the country’s first gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics. A video of Hoang’s historic win is expected to air in the waning moments of the year.
As is customary the roar of guns will ring out the old and usher in the new year, said city officials.

Da Nang city hosted a motorbike and sports bike rally on December 31. New Year celebrations will welcome guests from cruises docking at Tien Sa Port, including the Genting Dream and the SS Virgo.
