Vietnam’s highest decision-making bodies have decided to hold the funeral of former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Do Muoi with the national mourning etiquette in honor of his contributions.

In June 1991, he was elected General Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee, and held this position until December 1997, when he resigned and then acted as Adviser of the Party Central Committee until 2000.
He took over the leadership at a time Vietnam faced difficulties from the collapse of the Soviet Union and the US economic blockade. However, Vietnam managed to normalize diplomatic ties with China after a flash border war, and the US, the former war foe. Vietnam joined the ASEAN in 1995 and the WTO in 1997.
The former Party chief passed away at 23:12 on October 1, 2018, aged 101 due to prolonged serious illness, at the Central Military Hospital 108 in Hanoi.
The funeral board for Do Muoi consists of 39 members. Among them are Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, head of the board, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phucm Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan.
The mourning will take place at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong street, Hanoi.
The respect-paying ceremony will start at 7am on October 6 and run until 7:30am on October 7 and the memorial service will be held at 9:00am on October 7 at the National Funeral Hall
He will be buried on the same day in his native land in Dong My commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi.
This will be the third national funeral this year after former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai passed away in March and President Tran Dai Quang’s heart stopped last month.
During the two-day national mourning on October 6 – 7, national flags will be flown at half-mast at state offices and public places, and no recreational and entertainment activities will be held.
