Most Vietnamese people use Facebook Messenger for online shopping

People use Messenger mostly to contact shops amid growing e-commerce in Vietnam.

As many as 70% of Vietnamese people use chat apps Facebook Messenger for online shopping, according to a market research firm.

The rate of shoppers using this app rose by 23 percentage points since 2016, Ho Chi Minh City-based market research firm Q&Me said in a recent survey.

People use Messenger mostly to contact shops (61% of respondents) and restaurants (48%) while banks and workshops are not popular on Facebook Messenger as only 21% of Facebook users resorted to this app to contact banks and 15% use it to communicate with workshops.

But the top reason for contacting a business on Messenger is to ask for information about a product (57%), for purchase (55%), inquiry about promotions (47%) and checking product/service availability (37%).

Facebook Messenger is the most popular messaging app in Vietnam with 94% of respondents using it, followed by Zalo (89%) and phone text messages (59%).

The survey was conducted in January with more than 300 participants in Hanoi and HCM City, and additional data was collected from previous surveys done last November and April 2017.

Vietnam’s e-commerce market reported revenue of US$2.27 billion in 2018, surging 29.4% from a year earlier. The number of consumers shopping online hit 49.8 million people, growing by 2.6%, according to Germany-based market research firm Statista.
