Vietnam president to visit neighboring Laos, Cambodia

The visits are believed to enhance ties with the two neighboring countries amid growing economic relations.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and President Nguyen Phu Trong will pay an official visit to Laos on February 24-25 and a state visit to Cambodia on February 25-26, local media has reported.

The visits will be made at the invitation of Laotian President Bounnhang Vorachit and Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni.

This will be the first overseas trip after Trong was elected president in October 2018.

On February 20, President Trong received Laotian Minister of Public Security Vilay Lakhamfong in Hanoi.

In November 2016, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited Laos, his first foreign tour after the 12th Congress of the CPV, which defined the start of a five-year term leadership of key positions like the CPV’s general secretary, president, prime minister, and ministers.

In this visit, Vietnam and Laos signed seven agreements, including Vietnam’s donation to build a parliament hall in Vientiane and a high school in Bolikhamxay province, Vietnam’s investment in Hanoi-Vientiane expressway, and the strategic partnership for Houaphanh and Xiangkhouang provinces.

Meanwhile, Trong’s latest visit to Cambodia was in July 2017 as the CPV’s chief. During the visit, the Phnom Penh Post reported that Vietnam would donor US$25 million to help Cambodia build a parliament hall.

In December 2018, King of Cambodia Norodom Sihamoni paid a three-day “friendship building” visit to Vietnam and a leisure tour to Vietnamese central coastal city of Danang.
