The Vatican seeks closer ties with Vietnam

The Vatican is desirous of establishing diplomatic relations with Vietnam, Under-Secretary for Relations with States Antoine Camilleri told Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son at a meeting in Hanoi.

The Vietnam–Vatican Joint Working Group convened its fifth round of meetings in Hanoi from September 10-11 under the co-chairmanship of Bui Thanh Son and Antoine Camilleri to strengthen bilateral ties.

The Vatican side acknowledged the Vietnamese government’s support for the Vietnam Catholic Church’s operations in recent times and the country’s progress in its policy on religious affairs enshrined in the amended Constitution 2013.
The Vietnamese State has created favourable conditions for Vatican non-resident Special Envoy to Vietnam, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, to pay working visits to Vietnam, they said.
The Vatican always attaches importance to strengthening the relationship with Vietnam and other Asian countries, and this has reflected in visits by the Pope to Asia in recent times and in the future. The Vatican also wishes to take part in Vietnam’s development process through various humanitarian and education activities.
For his part, Deputy FM Son affirmed that the Party and State of Vietnam have given effect to consistent policies, ensuring religion freedom of citizens and encouraging the Catholic Church to participate in national construction and socio-economic development.
Hosts and guests emphasised on the motto “Living the Gospel in the midst of the Nation”. They pledged to promote regular visit exchanges, organise meetings, and support activities of the Vatican non-resident Special Envoy to Vietnam.
They agreed to hold the 6th round of talks in the Vatican. The time for the meeting will be arranged via diplomatic channels.
On this occasion, the Vatican delegation paid courtesy visits to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pham Dung, who is also Head of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs. They also visited a number of Catholic bases in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
