The visit takes place as the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership has grown in various areas. The economic-trade relationship continues its growing momentum with Vietnam-US bilateral trade in 2017 reaching US$51 billion while other cooperation areas have expanded, Thang stressed.
The US Secretary’s visit aims to promote the relation between the two nations, particularly in the fields of politics, foreign affairs, economy, trade, national defense, security and war aftermath settlement.
Vietnam is the first Southeast Asian country the US official will visit.
During the trip, both sides are expected to exchange numerous issues of mutual concern.
The US Secretary is expected to hold talks with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and meet with other senior Vietnamese officials.
Earlier, the US Department of State on July 2 announced on its website that US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo will travel to Hanoi, during his tour to five countries on July 5-12.
