Training course on UN peace-keeping mission opened in Vietnam

The Vietnam Department of Peace-keeping Operations opened a training course in Hanoi on July 16 for military experts dispatched to the United Nations peace-keeping mission. The course was supported by the Netherlands and partner countries.

The opening ceremony saw the attendance of delegates from several embassies, representatives of the European Union, the United Nations Development Program in Vietnam, agencies and units under the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense.

Lieutenant General Pham Ngoc Minh, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) and deputy head of the Defense Ministry's Steering Committee for Vietnam's participation in UN peacekeeping, chaired the ceremony and made opening remarks.

Minh underscored the importance of countries’ cooperation in holding courses to improve the capacity of Vietnamese peace-keeping forces towards gradually building a peace-keeping training establishment on par with those in regional countries, worthy of the UN's choice to implement trilateral activities in future peacekeeping training.

In addition to equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare for the role of Military Observers, Liaison Officers at UN Delegates, the training will also contribute to strengthening the defense cooperation between Vietnam and the Netherlands in particular and the European Union countries in general.

During the final five days of the course, participants will practice skills in inspection, investigation and verification, analysis of bombs, mines, and explosives, negotiation, mediation and so on.

The course, held from July 16 to August 3, is the seventh international training course in Vietnam and is the first training course with many training contents, field work exercises.

The course has been directly coordinated and organized by the staff of VPA and experienced experts from the Netherlands, Austria, Canada, Germany and Switzerland.
