Updated at Thursday, 01 Feb 2018, 21:15
The Hanoi chapter of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) on February 1 held a ceremony to honour 10 outstanding young people of the city in 2017.
They include Dinh Quang Hieu, a student of the University of Natural Sciences, the Vietnam National University – Hanoi and Vu Huy Cang, a student of the Electricity Power University.
Hieu won two gold medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad in two consecutive years of 2016 and 2017. Notably, in 2017, he was ranked ninth among 297 contestants with 92.13 points, contributing to the highest achievements that Vietnam has obtained at an International Chemistry Olympiad. Meanwhile, Cang, when working as a motorbike taxi driver, earnestly gave back a sum of VND320 million (US$14,070) left out by his customer.
In addition, some 16 outstanding start-up young entrepreneurs of Hanoi in 2017 were honoured at the event. On the occasion, a start-up consultation group was launched by the Hanoi chapter of the HCMCYU, which will provide support and counselling for young people in the city.
Five players of the Vietnam U23 team, who are members of Hanoi’s football clubs, were also honoured at the event. They received VND20 million (about US$879) each for their outstanding performances at the freshly concluded Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U23 Championship.
Vietnam’s U23 squad failed to grasp their historic AFC championship title after succumbing to a narrow 1-2 defeat to Uzbekistan in the finals on January 27. However, with their brave fighting spirit unabated until the last minute, Park Hang-Seo’s players have become the victors in the hearts of millions of football lovers.
This was the first time a Vietnamese national team has made it to the finals of a continental championship, attracting attention from football fans across the globe. In the snowy conditions at the Changzhou Olympic Sports Center, it was Uzbek defender Rustamjon Ashurmatov who scored first with a header in the 8th minute.
More than half an hour later, Vietnamese midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai equalized with a free kick. It was his fifth goal at the championship, making him one of the top scorers.
The match remained level in the second half, forcing the teams into extra time. In the 120th minute, Uzbek striker Andrey Sidorov scored the game-winning second goal, seizing the crown for Uzbekistan.
Initiated in 2009, HCMCYU has so far honoured 70 young people, who obtained prominent achievements in different fields such as study, scientific research, creativeness, national security and defence, culture and art, sports and community social activities.
