Vietnam to strictly control pre-activated SIM card and mobile phone subscribers
According to the General Statistics Office of the Ministry of Planning & Investment, as of the end of September, total number of mobile phone subscribers in Vietnam is 113.2 million, a decrease of 12.7% compared to the same period of last year.
It is due to the effort from the Ministry of Information & Communications in working with telecom providers and relevant agencies to strictly control pre-activated SIM cards.
As of the end of September, the total number of phone subscribers in Vietnam is 120.4 million, in which 113.2 million is mobile phone subscribers. With regard to information related to the socio-economic situation in the first 9 months of 2017, the General Statistics Office of the Ministry of Planning & Investment said, in 9 months, revenue in field of telecommunication is 283.9 trillion VND, up 8.1% compared to the same period of last year.
The number of fixed broadband internet subscribers at the end of September is 10.5 million, up 19.5% compared to last period. According to phone subscribers, the statistics shows, at the end of September, total number of subscribers is 120.4 million, decrease 11.2% compared to the same period of last year. In which, the number of mobile phone subscribers is 113.2 million, decrease 12.7% compared to the same period of last year.
According to the General Statistics Office, the reducing numbers are stemming from the effort of Ministry of Information & Communications in working with telecom providers and relevant agencies to strictly control pre-activated SIM cards. The Ministry expected the number of subscribers will continue falling in the coming time. With regard to the control of pre-activated SIM card, the Vietnam Information and Communication Technology White book 2017 recently issued by the Ministry of Information & Communications stated, in 2016, Ministry of Information & Communication has pushed up effort in removing advertising messages. Since the end of October 2016, after telecom providers signed an agreement with the Ministry of Information & Communications on withdrawing pre-activated SIM cards. Until the end of 2016, there were approx. 15 million pre-activated SIM cards locked.
With regard to industrial output, according to the General Statistics Office, in the first 9 months of 2017, the output has increased 7.9% compared to the same period of last year, which was 7.1% in 2016 and 7.2% of the fist 8 months of 2017. In particular, the production of electronic products and computers have significantly increased compared to the same period of last year, with an increase of 25.1%, which focuses on smart phones production with high added value and exporting electronic components to the global market.
The report of the General Statistics office also shows, this indicator has increased significantly in 3rd Quarter with the growth rate of 45.5% (higher than the increase of 5.9% in 1st Quarter and 23.5% of the 2nd Quarter), mainly due to Samsung Corporation’s expansion in production of high added value electronic products with expected revenue for the whole 2017 for electronic products of 1,2 trillion VND, up 17.7% compared to 2016.
Besides, with regard to the General Statistics Office, In the first 9 months of 2017, television is one of the industrial products with high growth compared to the same period of last year, with an increase of 31.6%; while smartphones only increase of 3.2%.
