The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is one of the five international science Olympiads, and is one of the most prestigious computer science competitions in the world.
The Vietnamese team attending the IOI 2018, which was held in Tsukuba, Japan from September 1-7, won four medals, the Ministry of Education and Training’s Department of Quality Management said on September 7.
Pham Duc Thang from the High School for Gifted Students of the University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi won a gold medal, and Hoang Xuan Nhat from the High School for Gifted Students of the Vietnam National University-HCM City bagged a silver medal.
Meanwhile, two bronze medals were won by Nguyen Hoang Hai Minh and Nguyen Khanh from the High School for Gifted Students of the University of Science under the Vietnam National University-Hanoi.
The IOI is an annual international informatics competition for individual contestants from various invited countries, accompanied by social and cultural programs.
IOI 2018 had a total of 335 candidates from 87 countries and territories. 167 of them won medals (29 gold medals, 55 silver medals and 83 bronze medals).
With one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals, the Vietnam national team ranked 12th in the world and second in Southeast Asia.
Vietnam national teams finished a successful international and regional Olympic season with 38/38 medal winners (13 gold medals, 14 silver medals and 11 bronze medals). This result confirms the position of Vietnamese high school students in the international intellectual arena.
