Hanoi International Marathon will be held in 2019.
The tournament is open to both professional and amateur runners, taking them to local landmarks such as the Old Quarters, the Hanoi Opera House, the West Lake, in 10km, 21km and 42km races.
The organizing board hopes that the tournament will be comparable to major marathons in Asia such as Singapore Marathon, Tokyo Marathon, London Marathon, and attract thousands of foreign runners to Hanoi, according to Danish Chargé d’Affaires in Vietnam Christian Brix Moller.
David Lloyd, Director of Topas, said he loves Hanoi and wants to popularise the city, its culture and landscapes in the way his company has done to promote Sa Pa in Lao Cai and Pu Luong in Thanh Hoa through races.
Every sport event organized by Topas aims to raise funds for charity activities, he added.
Proceeds from the Hanoi tournament will be used to support the Newborns Vietnam organisation in reducing newborn fatalities and the Operation Smile in conducting correctional surgeries for children.
Director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports To Van Dong pledged to issue a specific plan to ensure security and safety of runners as well as popularise Vietnam and Hanoi in particular to international friends.
Applications could be sent to the website http://www.hanoiinternationalmarathon.com from September 2018.
Hanoi receved 3 million foreign visitors in the first five months of 2018, up 26% year on year. They came from nearly 190 countries and territories with China, South Korea and Japan topping the list, according to the Hanoi Department of Tourism.
In 2018, Hanoi expects to serve more than 25.4 million holidaymakers, including 5.5 million foreigners, and gross some VND75.78 trillion (US$3.33 billion) in revenue.
