Hanoi handles 351 "funky ball" cases in 2 years

After two years of intensely combating, the illegal trading of "funky ball", "shisha" and "American weed" is no longer rampant and tends to decrease.

Hanoi's police have uncovered 351 cases related to drugs including the trafficking of notorious drugs such as "funky ball", "shisha" and "American weed", with fines totaling VND2.4 billion (US$103,200) after two years of implementing the Hanoi People's Committee's plan on these types of drugs.

The information was announced by Deputy Director of Hanoi's Police Department Nguyen Thanh Tung at a meeting on July 18.

The city’s departments and agencies positively participated in preventing, detecting and dealing with crimes related to production, trading and use of these kinds of drug.


Hanoi's police seized 10,000 “funky balls” and dozens of N2O cylinders on July 16 when raiding some 30 businesses, mainly bars and night clubs in Hang Buom, Luong Ngoc Quyen and Ta Hien streets, in the Old Quarter.

Director of the Hanoi Market Management Department Chu Xuan Kien said that the use of “funky ball” is rampant among young people in the city.

The Ministry of Public Security is also studying proposals to put “funky ball” into the list of drugs, Kien added.

Besides, a large amount of illegal beer, alcohol, cigarettes and “shisha” tools were seized.

Receiving over 1,200 cases of drug detoxification

Hanoi has actively encouraged drug users to take voluntary detoxification. 

The city's detoxification facilities have received over 1,200 drug users registered for voluntary detoxification (reaching 61.25% of the year’s target). The whole city has provided methadone treatment to more than 4,800 patients.


In the first six months of 2019, Hanoi police detected and dealed with 1,647 drug-related crimes with 1,926 involving infractors. The Hanoi Procuracy and People's Court prosecuted and brought to trial 1,154 cases with 1,359 drug offenders.

The deputy director of Hanoi Police said that they have investigated and uncovered so serious cases and dangerous criminals.
