Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam attended a teleconference held in Hanoi on January 12 to review the performance in 2016 and initiating tasks for 2017 for the cultural, sports and tourism sector.
The teleconference took place in Hanoi, the central city of Da Nang and HCM City at the same time on January 12.
Speaking at the conference, the PM appraised the significant achievements gained by the cultural, sports and tourism sector last year.
In 2016, the country welcomed 10 million international visitors and earned revenues of 400 trillion VND, fulfilling four years ahead the targets set in the Vietnam tourism development strategy to 2020 with a vision towards 2030.
Mentioning on the sports sector, PM Phuc spoke highly of the sector regarding its success in regional and international sporting competitions last year, including the first-ever Olympics gold medal and a silver medal at the Rio Olympics 2016 in Brazil, and the first-ever Paralympics gold medal.
The Government leader noted that he kept a close watch on every step of Vietnamese athletes and supported them on the arena.
During the year, many Party policies and guidelines and State management regulations in culture, sports and tourism, such as the Law on Tourism, and a project to develop tourism into a spearhead sector, have been refined.
The preservation and promotion of cultural values have achieved significant outcomes, helping honour the traditional cultural values and create attractive cultural and tourist products.
Notably, in the year, the practice related to the Vietnamese belief in Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms has been officially recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, increasing the number of internationally-claimed heritage possessed by Vietnam to 25.
However, PM Phuc pointed out shortcomings observed in culture sector, including the lack of cultural institutions for workers at industrial parks, and the modest income of those working in the field.
He also worried about such problems as deviation from traditional cultural custom, low sport performance in various regional and global competitions, and uncompetitive tourist products, asking the ministry to fix them in the future.
Regarding on tasks for this year, the PM stressed that culture development should be well placed as other crucial sectors in national economic development.
He said that social progress and people’s living conditions need to be further improved. The world’s cultural quintessence should be absorbed selectively while traditional cultural identities should be preserved and promoted, the PM noted.
The cultural sector should create a new image of Vietnam and its people working to intensively integrate into the global life along and build a healthy cultural environment.
The PM urged the ministry to be more active in consulting the Government and authorities at all levels in the the formation and promulgation of policies on removing barriers for cultural development as well as safeguarding and promoting Vietnamese cultural heritages.
He also requested the sector to effectively implement the Strategy on Tourism Development as well as documents of the Party, the National Assembly and Government on tourism development, especially the Politburo-issued resolution on turning tourism into the country's spearhead economic industry.
The Cabinet leader proposed five major questions for the tourism sector, including how to attract more tourists to Vietnam, how to prolong their stay, how to encourage them to spend more, how to make them share their positive stories in Vietnam to their friends and relatives rather than complaints about the country, and how to rely on them to visit Vietnam again.
PM Phuc emphasised that the tourism sector should find out solutions to draw more international tourists to Vietnam, who wish to stay longer, spend more, go home with memorable experiences and come back again.
