Vietnam to hold national exam as Covid-19 is contained

The exam is aimed to determine whether students qualify for graduating high school and the results could also be used to apply for certain universities and colleges.

Vietnam's national high school exam is scheduled to be held from August 8 to 11, VnExpress reported, citing the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) on April 21.

According to the ministry's proposal, if the Covid-19 pandemic is controlled and classes resume before June 15, the national high school exam will be held with five tests namely Maths, Literature, Foreign Language, Natural Science and Social Sciences. The tests will be the same as last year and suit the streamlined curricula.

Local education departments will be responsible for exam organization, supervision and test marking. The MoET will compile exam questions, apply information technology to strictly supervise the examinations, and organize the multiple-choice test on computers.

The exam is aimed to determine whether students qualify for graduating high school and the results could also be used to apply for certain universities and colleges.

Since 2015, the two separae exams have been pooled into one only and named national high school exam.

The exam not only aims at considering high school graduation, but is also used to apply for certain universities and colleges.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam emphasized that the exams are aimed at certifying the completion of high school and must be held with seriousness and honesty.

Earlier, the MoET on March 31 decided to streamline learning content for the second semester of the 2019-2020 academic year as students are taking a long break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Besides, the ministry decided to reschedule the end of 2019-2020 school year and national high school exam in 2020. Accordingly, the end of the school year will be deferred to July 15, 2020 and the national high school exam will be held on August 8-11, one and a half months later than the normal academic year.

If schools remain shut to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, the exam may not be held and provincial education departments will be empowered to assess and decide on students’ graduation. Besides, the universities will enroll students in accordance with the Law on Higher Education.
