19 start-up enterprises honoured for ideas coping with climate change
The Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the World Bank (WB) held a ceremony in Hanoi on June 14 to present awards to 19 outstanding start-up enterprises focusing on coping with climate change.
These are companies given financial assistance as well as incubating service from the Vietnam Centre for Innovation and Creativity.
The enterprises' projects are the most outstanding initiatives out of more than 300 projects focusing on solutions coping with climate change.
Through the selection and assessment of more than 300 project entries, the Minister of Science and Technology and experts from the WB selected 19 enterprises with excellent ideas which prove technology’s positive impact on green growth to develop a low-carbon economy in Vietnam.
Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh stressed that in the past years, the climate change has been increasingly paid to the special attention of the international community and Vietnam is considered as one of five countries in the world most heavily affected by climate change.
In order to effectively cope with climate change, in recent years the Vietnamese Government has been implementing many new institutions, policies and action plans to enhance national capability in response to climate change, the minister noted.
The country has also been working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency in economic sectors, minister Chu Ngoc Anh said.
19 enterprises's excellent ideas have shown positive impacts on the national economy, society and environment, he stressed.
The Vietnam Centre for Innovation and Creativity will continue search, select and incubate the other innovative ideas in technology coping with climate change through more competitions, the minister said.
WB's Acting Country Director in Vietnam Achim Fock said that awarded ideas made a great opportunity to demonstrate the Vietnamese enterprises's potential in the technology sector to cope with climate change.
These businesses offerred innovative solutions in combating climate change because more than anyone else, thereby giving the ideas to improve the local economy and create more jobs, according to Director in Vietnam Achim Fock.
In order to help Vietnam respond to climate change, the international community has assisted many projects on green growth, and in technical and investment assistance projects to boost institutions and infrastructures.
In 2015, the WB provided non-refundable aid sourced from the official development assistance of the Department for International Development ( DFID ) of the United Kingdom and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia, to create the Vietnam Climate Change Innovation Centre.
The Vietnam Climate Change Innovation Centre aims to support domestic businesses in clean technology and help more than 1,700 households access to new smart eco-friendly and improved products and services within the first 3 years of operation.
