Future of Tradition would like to invite you to attend a talk with Visual Artist Nguyen Huy An: “An area familiar yet strange”. This talk is the 5th in the series of events of the project.
In this 5th event, Future of Tradition opens up a conversation with Visual Artist Nguyen Huy An who has experimented many mediums such as paintings, installations and especially performances. Among them, there are many works that have a strong connection with indigenous culture, resonate and influence in the community of contemporary art practice in Vietnam.
“An area familiar yet strange” – which is that area? How about is the “familiar” and “strange” through his point of view? And how about the artist’s direction? Through reference to his personal practices, Artist Nguyen Huy An will clarify these questions.

Film Screening “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”
You are invited to a screening of the film “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin” by director Josef Mach. With “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”, author Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich created a large multi-volume Indian series, which is considered to be so far unmatched with its authentic representation of the Dakota tribe in the 19th century. In the GDR and the socialist brother countries, the books enjoyed great popularity. The protagonist is the Lakota boy Harka whose father Mattotaupa is the chief of the tribe. The books tell a story about the boy Harka on his journey as he grows up to be chieftain Tokei-ihto.
The 1966 film “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”, directed by Josef Mach based on the literary series, was one of the most successful DEFA productions of the GDR with Gojko Mitić in the main role, for which Welskopf-Hernrich wrote the screenplay. The huge popularity of the film sets the foundation for the production of the DEFA Indian films.

Book Presentation: “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”
The book presentation “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin” invites you this weekend. The most successful book series for youth of the GDR tells a story about the American-Indian boy Harka and how he becomes the chief of his tribe.
Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich (1901-1979) was a writer and ancient historian. Professionally, she dealt with ancient Greece and in her private life, she devoted herself to the history of the American-Indians. Her novels are classics of the GDR literature.
With “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin” she received the First Prize for juvenile literature of the GDR in 1951 and in 1968 the Friedrich Gerstäcker Prize. The series has been translated into 18 languages.
