August 20: Vietnam’s coronavirus infections surpass 1,000

More than half of the patients have recovered.

The latest locally-transmitted infections include 11 in Danang, 1 in Quang Nam and two people returning from overseas and quarantined upon arrival.

Danang takes the lead in the number of Covid-19 patients with 372 cases while its neighbor Quang Nam is the second largest hotspot of local infections.

In response to a spate of new coronavirus-infected cases, dozens of cities and provinces have taken preventive measures since the local transmission reemerged in Danang on July 25. Danang continues undergoing lockdown after the first 14-day period ended on August 11.

Meanwhile, Hanoi and Hai Duong become the biggest outbreaks in the north. Hai Duong’s capital city has been put under lockdown since August 14.

Authorities in Hanoi have imposed social distancing measures at cafes, restaurants, and pubs from August 19. Customers are required to sit one meter from each other.

The situation has prompted Ho Chi Minh City's authorities to consider testing arrivals from Hanoi, Hai Duong, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai, where cases have been reported, as a precaution.

Vietnam has reported 25 deaths so far, all from July 31.
