DPM Hai meets with CITES Secretary-General

Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai called for more technical assistance for Viet Nam to effectively realize the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The Deputy PM raised the point during his reception for CITES Secretary-General John E. Scanlon in Ha Noi on May 28.

Praising the guest’s visit to Viet Nam, Mr. Hai affirmed that besides CITES, the Vietnamese Government has responsibly implemented a number of relevant documents like the Convention on Biological Diversity and London Declaration on Illegal Wildlife Trade.
The Vietnamese Government also exhausted efforts to prevent, crack down and strictly punish transnational organized crime gangs engaging in illegal trade, transportation, import and export, and consumption of wild, endangered, precious and rare fauna and flora, Mr. Hai added.
Mr. John Scanlon congratulated Viet Nam on 20-year accession to the CITTEs, expressing his hope for further cooperation with Viet Nam in information sharing and capacity building.
He also spoke highly of Viet Nam’s efforts in detecting and dealing with acts of illegal wildlife trade as well as adopting a string of legal documents and programs to preserve biological diversity./.
