This is the first time a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam has made a visit to the US.
The visit takes place at an important time as the Vietnam and the US are marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
The visit aims to further develop relations between the two countries and deepen the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership, with a focus on the fields of investment, trade expansion and facilitation, education-training, science-technology and defence-security.
The two sides will also exchange and share views on some international issues and areas of mutual interest.
