On July 23, Mr. Pham Quang Nghi - Politburo member, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Head of the delegation of the National Assembly of Hanoi paid the visit to New York at invitation of the US State Department. July 28, Nghi left New York, ended the successful mission to the US.
Nghi met the first Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) - Jan Eliasson; attended the seminar organized by the Asia Society; exchanged with the Leadership for Reconciliation and Development Fund; met representatives of leftist friends; overseas Vietnamese, and visited a number of economic, cultural, social areas in New York.
During the meeting, Nghi had an overview of the situation in Vietnam, domestic policy, foreign policy, the country's renewal achievements, challenges and solutions in the near future. Nghi expressed his great gratitude to the leftist friends and American people for persevering and supporting the revolution during the years of struggle for national liberation and reunification of the country as well as in building and defending the country today. Pham Quang Nghi thanked the UN specialized agencies for cooperating and helping in effective alleviation of poverty and the development of Vietnam, contributing to the achievement of the Vietnam Innovation; affirmed the policy of the Party and State of Vietnam is proactive and positive in international integration, Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community. Pham Quang Nghi stressed with overseas Vietnamese consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam, considered abroad Vietnamese community is an integral part of the people of Vietnam; recognized and applauded the sentiment and contribution of overseas Vietnamese to their homeland, especially most recent activities of Vietnamese communities around the world, indicating patriotism when they condemned, criticized infringements independence and sovereignty of our country's islands. Nghi encouraged, reminded overseas Vietnamese to enhance love tradition, solidarity, mutual assistance and respect the laws of the host, and continue towards the Fatherland.
Especially, in the meetings and discussions with representatives from various agencies, the US organizations organized by the Asia Society, Mr. Pham Quang Nghi has reviewed the situation in the East Sea in recent months, highlighting determination, guidelines and proper measures to fight lucidity of the Party, State and people of Vietnam to protect our independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country; settling disputes by peaceful diplomatic measures, consistent with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982, and extremely considered and preserved the environment of peace and stability to construct and develop the country; maintaining and strengthening friendly relations and cooperation with developing countries, especially neighboring countries.
First Deputy Secretary General - Jan Eliasson welcomed Pham Quang Nghi to visit UN Headquarters, appreciated the cooperation and positive contribution in the last 37 years of Vietnam; Vietnam is officially welcomed to participate peacekeeping forces of the UN; praised the admirable achievements of Vietnam in hunger eradication and poverty reduction objectives and the implementation of the Millennium Development; wishes Vietnam to continue to share lessons learned in development for other member states of the UN, and pledged to continued cooperation and support Vietnam in implementing the goals of economic – social development.
Talking to the Asia Society in the presence of many prestige scholars, researchers, social activists – an US social organization with large position in relations with Asia in particular and the world in general, participants expressed their deep concern about the complicated situation, especially in the East Sea when China illegally placed down oil rig Hai-yang 981 in the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf of Vietnam; many scholars highly appreciated frankly-expressed, open and constructive opinions from Mr. Pham Quang Nghi, making right policy clear, principled approach and restraint attitude of Vietnam in solving complex issues and recent tensions caused by China; expressed a wish to the regional situation to be soon turn normal, ensuring peace and stability in a region that the international community had many common interests.
Before coming to New York, the delegation had meetings and working in Washington DC, to meet and work with Senior Advisor of the US Secretary of State - Thomas Shannon; Deputy National Security Advisor - Tony Blinken in charge of foreign affairs, the Senate Standing Committee Chairman - Patrick Leahy and Senator John McCain.
The US secretary John Kerry went to work to solve unexpected situation in the Middle East, so Ms. Wendy Sherman - US Deputy Secretary of State, on behalf to greet and exchange with Mr. Pham Quang Nghi. Nghi also had discussions, working with Chairman National Democratic Institute (NDI) - Kenneth Wollack and Chairman of the International Republican Institute (IRI) - Mark Green, discussing mutual issues. The meeting took place in the open atmosphere, cooperation and mutual understanding.
