Rural development is strategic policy of Party, State: PM

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung reiterated that building new-style rural areas is a strategic policy of the Party and State while meeting with voters from Thuy Nguyen district, northern Hai Phong city, on July 6.

The PM said Vietnam remains a rural country with 70 percent of the population living in rural areas; hence in the foreseeable future, the country needs to industrialise and modernise agriculture and rural areas.

He pointed out that the 19 criteria set for new style rural areas are also in line with the goal of industrialising and modernising agriculture and rural areas.
The Party and State will continue to mobilise all resources to develop rural areas, while creating all favourable conditions for businesses to invest in socio-economic infrastructure and production in these disadvantaged areas, he confirmed.
The national rural development programme covers 19 criteria such as building infrastructure and public works, improving production capacity, protecting environment, and promoting local traditions and cultures.
PM Dung said the Government will continue to review and supplement policies to support fishermen in aquatic breeding, processing and off-shore operation, in a bid to increase their living standards and contribute to the national sea and island sovereignty defence.
Discussing with the voters the protection of domestic production, the PM said besides necessary measures, it is necessary to increase quality and competitiveness of local goods and services via the application of modern science and technology.
In response to voters’ concern about the national sea and island sovereignty, the PM said the East Sea situation is still witnessing complicated developments. “Vietnam is resolved to defend its independence and sea and island sovereignty by suitable measures in line with international law,” he said.
PM Dung extolled the all-around achievements that the northern port city has gained over the past few years, saying he hopes the city will build on its attainments as well as tap its potential and advantages to become a strong industrial hub in the northern region and the country at large.
