Spain, Vietnam sign legal assistance treaty in criminal matters

Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuracy Nguyen Hoa Binh and Spanish Minister of Justice Rafael Catala Polo on September 18 inked a treaty on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters between Vietnam and Spain in Madrid.

The deal aims to promote mutual legal assistance activities pertaining to criminal issues between relevant agencies as it is considered an important legal framework and basis for the two sides to cooperate more effectively in preventing and fighting crimes, especially trans-national organised ones.

It also specifies both sides’ international commitments to combating crimes and their responsibility for enforcing law, protecting justice and ensuring legitimate rights and interests of their States, organisations and citizens,Rafael Catala Polo said.

Prosecutor General Binh in turn said the treaty will help perfect the bilateral legal framework, thus creating the best possible conditions for their agencies to settle foreigner-related criminal cases, principally trans-national crimes amidst the strong globalization and international integration.

He described the deal as a testimony to the sound friendship between the two countries in various fields thereby contributing to their strategic partnership in the future.

Vietnam and Spain will continue spurring cooperation in law enforcement, particularly mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, and personnel capacity enhancement, Binh assured his guest.

In 2014, both nations signed the treaties on extradition and transfer of sentenced persons.
