Vietnam committed to implement sustainable development goals

At the invitation of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, State President Truong Tan Sang will lead a Vietnamese delegation to attend the UN Summit for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in New York, the US from September 25-28.

The UN Summit for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is the largest UN conference since the UN Summit to approve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000, the event is attracting over 170 State and Government leaders from countries worldwide.

Summit participants will officially adopt a new global development agenda at the plenary session, which is expected to lay a foundation and the strategic orientations for sustainable development through 2030.

The agenda, including 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets , is the result of active negotiations among UN member nations, including Vietnam, over the last two years. The goals and targets will stimulate action over the next fifteen years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.

Vietnam’s participation in the event intends to affirm its determination to implement sustainable development goals and share the country’s experience in the field with international friends.

He will take part in a summit meeting on United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (PKO) , a global leader meeting on gender equality and a meeting with the UN Secretary General.

President Truong Tan Sang will also host separate meetings with other leaders on the sidelines of the Summit. During his stay in the US, the Vietnamese official will have a policy dialogue with the Asia Society as well as participate in a Vietnam-US business dialogue and the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2015 Annual Meeting , and meet with Vietnamese expatriates.

Vietnam has made important socio-economic development achievements in recent years. The country’s GDP hit 6.28% in the first six months of this year – the highest rate in the last five years.

The country has successfully realised many of the MDGs, especially in poverty reduction, and advanced diplomatic relations by reinforcing and tightening multifaceted cooperation with major countries and crucial partners. It has also made efforts to promote regional links and ties with the UN.
