Vietnam imports 420 cars a day YTD

Under-nine-seat cars made up the largest proportion of imported cars to Vietnam in April, accounting for 81% of total imported with 8,839 units.

In the first four months of 2019, Vietnam imported 50,682 cars, equivalent to 420 cars per day, representing a 7.5-fold increase year-on-year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs (GDVC). 
 
Upon breaking down, the country imported 36,216  under-nine seat cars, 13,045  trucks and 119  over-nine-seat cars.

In April, Vietnam bought from abroad 10,868 cars worth US$244 million, averaging VND527.6 million (US$22,586) per car, excluding taxes. 

Half of the number of cars imported into Vietnam last month came from Thailand with 5,620 units. Meanwhile, Indonesia claimed the second spot with 3,669 units, followed by China with 467 and Japan with 308. 

Under-nine-seat cars made up the largest proportion of imported cars to Vietnam, accounting for 81% of total imported with 8,839 units. Thailand was the largest exporter of cars under this category to Vietnam with 4,127 units, down 34.5% month-on-month, while the number of under-nine-seat cars from Indonesia has been increasing sharply at 48.4%, reaching 3,666 units. 

Additionally, 1,583 trucks worth US$48.5 million were imported into Vietnam last month, including 1,493 from Thailand, accounting for 94% of the total trucks in April but down 60% month-on-month. 

Vietnam also imported accessories and parts worth US$1.3 billion during the January – April period, up 21.6% year-on-year. Suppliers of those products were mainly from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, China, Germany, and Indonesia, and India.
