Vietnam rings in New Year with firework, music extravaganzas

Millions of people across Vietnam took to the streets in jubilant celebrations of the traditional Lunar New Year, which fell at midnight on February 18.

A wave of colourful fireworks erupted over major venues in cities and provinces, dazzling a sea of spectators.
In capital Hanoi, tens of thousands of citizens and foreigners strolled around the Hoan Kiem Lake, the heart of the capital and downtowns nearby, soaking in the festive atmosphere.

In the southern metropolis Ho Chi Minh City, local residents crammed thoroughfares, historical-cultural sites to watch multi-coloured pyrotechnic shows.
Ham Nghi, Dong Khoi, Pham Ngoc Thach, Nam Ky Khoi Nghia streets, and many others were decked out with lights and apricot, sunflower and peach blossoms.
A worker at Cat Lai port in the city expressed hope that his company will reap more rewards during this year.
In Vietnam’s far north, Ha Giang province also rang in the Year of Goat with folk music performances and fireworks displays in 8 districts.
The southernmost province of Ca Mau, meanwhile, hosted 8,000 – 10,000 visitors per day before and during the occasion.
Flags, flowers, banners and splendid lights almost filled every corner of the streets. A night festival of coloured lanterns and outdoor music show in Ca Mau city attracted huge crowds to herald a year of new success and happiness.
