Grab to pilot food delivery service in Vietnam
Ride-hailing firm Grab has introduced food deliveries through its GrabFood platform in Vietnam after successful roll-outs in Indonesia and Thailand.
GrabFood services will initially be piloted in five districts of Ho Chi Minh City - Districts No 1, 3, 7, Tan Binh and Binh Thanh - where most restaurants are located. Consumers in Vietnam will be able to order food from restaurants near them through GrabFood without any minimum order requirements, said Jerrry Lim, Country Head of Grab Vietnam.
Grab will continue working with over 500 enterprises and restaurants in Ho Chi Minh to expand its service network. Current and new driver partners can take part in this service to increase their income.
Meanwhile, Grab's merchant partner can now explore the online service to serve new customers through the utilization of Grab's driver partners.
To use the service, customer just launch the grab application and select "Food" from the accordion menu. After filling all the necessary information and selecting meal from a certain restaurant, Grab will deliver the food to customer with money be paid at the time of delivery.
GrabFood was first launched in Jakarta in 2016 and subsequently tested in Bangkok last year.
Grab on March 26 confirmed that it has acquired Uber's South-east Asia operations for an undisclosed sum, but described as worth "several billion dollars" by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in an email sent to employees, putting an end to recent speculation about the merger between the two ride-hailing giants.
Uber would take a 27.5% stake in Grab, a figure which Grab described as "reflective of the companies' respective market shares", while Khosrowshahi will join the Grab board, Grab confirmed.
Grab and Uber arrived in Vietnam in 2014 and operate both car and motorbike taxi services. The two services have been running on a trial basis since early 2016, but have been caught up in a turf war with traditional taxi drivers.
Vinasun, a local taxi company took Grab to court accusing the firm of violating tax obligations. Last September, Hanoi Taxi Association said Uber and Grab had been transferring around $150 million overseas every year to evade taxes. Grab denied the accusation.
