Vietnam PM announces to enhance military capability in 2020

Military capacity enhancement will be designed one of the key tasks set for the government in 2020.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said at the ongoing National Assembly’s 8th session that enhancing military capability will be one of the key tasks of the cabinet in 2020.

Strengthening armed forces will be highlighted together with socio-political stability, foreign affairs enhancement, and more extensive international integration, the PM said in in a report presented at the month-long sitting which opened in Hanoi today [October 21]

The South China Sea situation remains complicated, including the violations of Vietnamese territorial waters that goes against high-ranking agreements and the ASEAN-China’s Declaration on Conduct of the Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), PM Phuc said.

He noted that the situation is likely to continue with unpredictable movements in 2020.

“The Party and State have a consistent stance on the sovereignty integrity without compromise while keeping peace and stability for the national development,” Phuc said in a statement.

“We have been determined to settle the sovereignty issues by different channels which are in line with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 while keeping good relationships with the related nations,” he added.

Some days ago, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and State President Nguyen Phu Trong said that keeping the sovereignty and territorial integrity becomes the first and foremost mission, and “the country will do by all means to keep the sovereignty intact.”

Vietnam’s rightful stance on the South China Sea issues has caught support from the locals and the international community, PM Phuc said.

The PM stressed that in 2020 Vietnam will maintain the independent and multilateral diplomacy, working effectively as for ASEAN Chair, non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and host country of the 41st ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).
