Vietnam praises US tariff suspension

Vietnam highly values the US government's decision to halt its new tariffs on Vietnamese exports.

THE HANOI TIMES — The postponement of new US tariffs on Vietnamese exports is a good move, Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on April 10.

In the spirit of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the 30 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the two sides will soon start talks on a reciprocal trade agreement based on mutual respect to achieve fair, sustainable and win-win trade in the interests of the people and businesses of the two countries, she said.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on April 2 imposing higher tariffs on goods from 180 countries. Vietnamese exports faced a 46% tariff, one of the highest.

On April 4, General Secretary To Lam had a phone conversation with President Trump in which he confirmed Vietnam's willingness to reduce its tariffs on US goods to 0% and increase imports.

He called on the US to apply similar tariff policies to Vietnamese exports and expressed hope for a bilateral agreement to formalize these commitments.

On April 9, President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause in his reciprocal tariff plan and levied 10% tariffs on imports from many countries, including Vietnam.

On April 10, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc, leading a high-level Vietnamese delegation, met with USTR Jamieson Greer to discuss bilateral economic and trade relations.

The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.
