Duong Lam ancient village – a must-visit destination in Hanoi

Duong Lam is among a few ancient villages in Vietnam that still keep the majority of its traditional architectures. Located in the namesake commune of Son Tay town, Hanoi, it charms visitors by authentic architecture of typical traditional houses as well as features of Vietnamese rice culture in every corner of this village.

Also being well-known as “Vietnamese Ancient Village” or “Laterite Ancient Village”, Duong Lam has been ranked the first National Artistic Monument.

According to a representative of this village, Duong Lam is a harmonious combination of tangible and intangible cultural values including an ancient village gate, communal house, temples, pagodas, shrines, tombs, wells, observation posts. among others.

Most vestiges of Duong Lam heritage were built with the laterite, a traditional material of the area, which is believed to help strongly cement the constructions through the time and has a typical antique beauty.

Especially, visitors across Vietnam and worldwide were amazed at the simple and natural ancient houses with the roofs commonly covered with green moss layers for hundreds of years. The road layout in fishbone shape with a number of alleyways contain its unique and mysterious beauty is the spotlight of the village.

Besides, the village also has a large treasure of Han-Nom literature including typical epitaphs reflected in horizontal lacquered boards, couplet tablets, and calligraphy.

In the cultural space of the ancient village also include the variety of sauces which is iconic of Mong Phu village sauce, Che Kho (or brown sweet soup), Che Lam, Mia chicken, roasted meat, peanut candy, among others

Duong Lam welcomes over 10 thousand visitors annually and has been listed among three international tourism villages of Hanoi beside Van Phuc silk village in Ha Dong district and Bat Trang ceramic village in Gia Lam district.

It is forecast that the tourism development activities and the number of visitors to Duong Lam will keep thriving, which in turn poses challenges for the locals to cope with fostering economic, cultural and tourism growth on the one side, and conserve the good traditional culture of the ancient village on the other.
