Hanoi to consider Finnish technologies for urban waste treatment

Hanoi’s authority wants to encourage Finland`s businesses to increase investment in turning organic waste into bio-gas.

Hanoi will consider Finnish technologies for urban waste treatment, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen The Hung said at a reception for Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam Kari Kahiluoto on October 3.

Hung stressed that this is one of the key contents in the cooperation between Hanoi and the Finnish business community.

Appreciating Finland’s waste treatment technologies, Hung said that these solutions are very effective and suitable for Hanoi as the city discharges a large amount of organic waste which could be transformed into bio-gas.

Briefing the guest on the current waste situation in the city, Hung said that every day Hanoi has about 8,000 tons of waste to treat. Getting residents to sort trash at home before being removed by waste collectors is a challenge for Hanoi. So far, waste in the city has not yet been classified.

Therefore, Hanoi’s authority wants to encourage Finland's businesses to increase investment in turning organic waste into bio-gas, he added.

The city’s authority is willing to show the Finnish businesses the locations where they could set up their waste processing plant and support them in investment procedures, transport connection and site clearance so that they could roll out the waste treatment project, Hung said.

For his part, Kari Kahiluoto affirmed that he will promote trade ties between Finland and Vietnam, as well as foster Finnish companies'
operations in Hanoi and across the country.

Some Finnish companies with advanced technology in urban waste treatment joined the ambassador at the reception. Each company has its own strengths, such as converting waste into energy, bio-gas and humus. They said they could work together to propose a comprehensive and optimal solution for waste treatment in Hanoi.

They also discussed the best waste treatment models and technologies suitable for Hanoi at the reception.

Kari Kahiluoto expressed his wish that Hanoi’s authority will consider the technologies that Finnish companies offered, as well as provide information on the city's current solid waste management and on how they can support Hanoi.
