Hoi An Lantern Festival to light up Wernigerode
In 2013, Vietnam’s Hoi An city and Germany’s Wernigerode town signed an agreement, marking the debut of a sisterhood between two cities.
Hoi An Lantern Festival will light up ancient streets in Wernigerode City, Germany from August 23 to 25, To Quoc reported, citing the Center for Culture, Sports, Radio and Television of Hoi An on July 11.
During the three days of the festival, the craftsmen, artists and chefs from Hoi An will show off their skills to promote culture and cuisine of the ancient town in Wernigerode. Visitors to the festival will delight their palate with a variety of dishes from Southeast Asia and Vietnam.
In addition, experts from Hoi An and Wernigerode will brief visitors on the sisterhood project between Vietnam’s Hoi An city and Germany’s Wernigerode town, including economic cooperation between companies from the two sides, human resource training program for hotels, restaurants and installation of solar power farms in Hoi An, among others.

On that occasion, a lantern festival was held in Wernigerode, showcasing thousands of lanterns made by Hoi An artisans. Other sports and cultural activities also took place with the participation of Vietnamese artists and Vietnamese expatriates in Germany.
Wernigerode, a small city in Harz County, has a population of about 35,000 people and more than 2,000 old houses. Hoi An is an ancient town in central Quang Nam Province which was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
In 2018, Hoi An welcomed five million visitors, a 50.84% increase from the previous year, including 3.7 million foreigners, according to Quang Nam province Department of Tourism.
