IAEA-VINATOM center for water and environment inaugurated in Hanoi

The IAEA-VINATOM Collaborating Center will be the focal point for scientific exchange, cooperation in research and capacity building through personnel and material facilities between Vietnam and the IAEA.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) inaugurated the IAEA-VINATOM center for water and environment monitoring in Hanoi on April 4, according to the website of the Vietnam Energy Association.

Through the center, both organizations will conduct joint research and training, together hold conferences and sponsor activities for promoting the application of nuclear and isotope techniques in water and environmental research in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, said Director of VINATOM Tran Chi Thanh.

In 2019, the center will focus on capacity building through training cooperation programs and co-financing with IAEA such as upgrading, repairing and supplementing modern research equipment in the traceability field Thanh noted.

He emphasized that the traceability in trade and food is a major challenge in Vietnam and the world. The development of nuclear and isotope techniques in water and environment research will also be applied in many other fields related to traceability.

For her part, IAEA Deputy Director General Najat Mokhtar said that Vietnam is a tropical monsoon coastal country, which is heavily influenced by climate change and faces many environmental issues. Therefore, a lot of nuclear and isotope techniques at the IAEA can be applied in Vietnam to assess water resources, traceability of pollutants, or environmental treatment, Najat Mokhtar.

She stressed that the establishment of the IAEA-VINATOM Collaborating Center will be the focal point for scientific exchange, cooperation in research and capacity building through personnel and material facilities between Vietnam and the IAEA.
