Michelle Phan strikes it rich advertising on YouTube

How many views does it take to make a thousand US dollars advertising on YouTube is a very common question asked everyday by tens of millions of daydreamers hoping to strike it rich.

It’s commonplace to hear that a person can make anywhere from US$.30 or even US$1 dollar per every thousand views but neither of these answers is technically correct— because the amount earned doesn’t depend on the actual number of views at all.

Advertisers only make money on YouTube for viewers who are engaged with the ad and watch it for more than 30 seconds or half of the length of the ad, whichever comes first. They are paid on a cost per click (CPC) or cost per view (CPV) model.

CPC is when an advertiser pays money based on clicks when the ad is viewed for a time that exceeds the 30 second rule.

So, if a certain keyword has a CPC of US$.30 per thousand and viewers click on that adone million times, the advertiser will pay US$300. These text ads generally pop up in the lower part of the screen during a video and can also show up as a square banner on the right side of the YouTube channel.

CPV is when an advertiser pays money based solely on views exceeding the 30 second rule.  A viewer could click an advertisement 50 times but the advertiser would only pay once because they’re not paying for the click, they’re paying for the view.

Advertisers only pay when someone clicks an ad or watches for 30 seconds.  Therefore,it's not possible to tie the number of channel views to dollars.  If a video on a channel gets one million views but nobody watches or click the ads, they won’t earn anything.

Generating a meaningful revenue stream from advertising on YouTube gets much more complicated than just described, however,as there are still many more variables to consider such as the price of ads, types of ads, type of video, source of view by country, and so forth.

Getting rich from YouTube videos is a popular daydream that is very rarely achieved. The extreme competition, low payouts, and often random chance associated with making a popular video means that the odds are stacked against anyone setting out to be the next big YouTube star.
Michelle Phan, a Vietnamese-American self-taught unlicensed make-up instructor and product demonstrator, with a currentestimated net worth of US$3 million, is an exception to the general rule however.

Phan, whosometimes uses the online alias ricebunny, earned her net worth by posting make-up, beauty and fashion tutorials on YouTube.Born in Boston, MA to Vietnamese parents, Phan grew up in Massachusetts and California then settled in Tampa, Florida where she attended high school.

She originally planned to take up medicine at the request of her mother but enjoyed art and was able to convince her mom to allow her to major in illustration.

Michelle first post on makeup tutorials were in Xanga under the username Ricebunny. She then started posting on YouTube in 2006 and made around 200 videos. By January 2013, she already has over 3,050,000 subscribers and 706,950,000 video views.

Her channel today is the most subscribed beauty channel on YouTube. Her popular beauty tutorials include Romantic Valentine Look, Brighter Larger Looking Eyes, Makeup for Glasses, and Mysterious Masquerade Look.

Among her video tutorials, the most popular include the Lady Gaga Poker Face Tutorial with more than 33,000,000 million views, Lady Gaga Bad Romance Look with over 34,000,000 views, Romantic Valentine Look with over 8,000,000 and Seductive Vampire with more than 14,000,000 views.
