Polluted river in Hanoi treated with West Lake’s water

With more than one million cubic meters of water received from West Lake, the To Lich river’s pollution will be reduced in the time ahead.

After receiving one million cubic meters of water from West Lake on July 9, Hanoi’s To Lich river’s water quality has been significantly improved, local media reported.

The discharge of water from West Lake to To Lich river is aimed at preventing overflow ahead of the rainy season.

Deputy General Director of Hanoi Water Supply and Sewerage Company Phan Hoai Minh said that according to the regulation, the company must lower the water level in the city’s ponds and lakes, including West Lake to reserve space for storing upcoming rainwater.

The water level of West Lake (about 500ha wide) is 25cm higher than the regulated level. So it has to discharge more than one million m3 of water to the To Lich river to bring West Lake’s water level to the regulated level, Minh added.

With more than 1 million m3 of water received from West Lake, the To Lich river’s water will have stronger flow within 2 days, Minh said, stressing that the To Lich river’s pollution will be reduced in the time ahead.

Hanoi city is currently piloting a host of measures to "revive" its To Lich river which is dying due to heavy pollution and massive accumulation of mud in the river bed, including the application of Japanese and German technologies. Initially, positive results have been seen on the river thanks to these technologies; in particular, the river’s bad smell has been reduced and oxygen level in the river’s water has been raised.

Besides, Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Limited Company is submitting a plan to use the West Lake to relay water from the Red River to the To Lich river. This proposal is highly valued by experts.
