Vietnam consumer prices rise 0.33% m/m in October

Core inflation in October picked up 0.13% month-on-month, resulting in an increase of 1.67% year-on-year on average in the January - October period.
Vietnam's CPI, a gauge of inflation, saw an increase of 0.33% in October against the previous month, and up 3.89% year-on-year, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The gauge marked an increase of 3.54% compared to the end of 2017.
Ten out of 11 commodity groups, which are components of the basket for CPI calculation, witnessed monthly hikes in prices.
Among them, transportation costs posted the sharpest increase of 1.55%. This was seen a result of an increase in fuel retail prices on October 6, leading to a 3.45% increase in the price and contributing 0.14 percentage points to the overall CPI growth.
Other groups that also saw their prices pick up included education (0.58%); food and catering services (0.22%); housing, water and electricity supply, and construction materials (0.31%); culture, entertainment, and tourism (0.09%); beverages and cigarettes (0.03%); household equipment and appliances (0.11%); medicine and healthcare services (0.02%); goods and other services (0.09%); garment, footwear and hat group (0.15%).
Post and telecommunications service price was the only commodity group and service that experienced a decline, by 0.04%.
Overall, the CPI expanded 3.6% year-on-year on average in the first ten months, against the government target of 4%.
According to the GSO, core inflation in October picked up 0.13% month-on-month, resulting in an increase of 1.67% year-on-year on average in the January - October period.
This led to an increase of 1.43% in the core inflation rate in the first ten months compared to the same period of 2017.
