Vietnam emerges as a reliable member of the United Nations

Vietnam has maintained an active cooperation with the United Nations in a wide range of areas.

Since becoming the 149th member of the United Nations (UN) on September 20, 1977, Vietnam has significantly contributed to the world's largest multilateral organization, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet has said.

Over the years, the country has evolved from an aid recipient to an active development partner and committed actor in the global community, Viet told local media after Vietnam announced its candidacy for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term.

Active role in various UN sectors

The Southeast Asian nation has made significant contributions to various UN initiatives in the areas of peacekeeping, security, sustainable development, and human rights. Its participation in peacekeeping efforts has been particularly noteworthy. Over the past decade, nearly 1,000 officers, military personnel, and police have been deployed to UN missions in conflict zones such as South Sudan and the Central African Republic. These deployments have strengthened the country's image as a responsible and humanitarian partner in the international community.

Apart from peacekeeping, Vietnam has played an active role in humanitarian aid, assisting populations affected by conflicts and crises. These efforts have improved living conditions in crisis-hit regions and reaffirmed the country's commitment to global responsibility.

Contributing to sustainable development

Vietnam has assumed a prominent role in advancing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is now focusing on achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs). The government has introduced a number of practical initiatives, such as green transformation, digitalization, and the promotion of science and technology. These efforts aim to achieve economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability and improving social well-being.

The country has been an active party in global initiatives to combat climate change. Facing significant challenges from rising sea levels and natural disasters, Vietnam has proposed sustainable solutions and advocated for international cooperation in environmental protection, resource management, and food security. The country's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, announced at the COP26 summit, underscores its determination to protect the environment for future generations.

International standing and influence

The Southeast Asian nation has held key positions within the UN system, serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 term and as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023-2025 term. In these roles, it has helped shape critical policies on peace, security, and human rights, while advocating for the interests of developing countries and promoting global peace and prosperity.

Vietnam has acted as a bridge between developing and developed countries in various international cooperation frameworks. Its initiatives in South-South cooperation and knowledge sharing with regional partners have received considerable recognition from the global community.

The country remains committed to multilateral cooperation and contributing to developing a fair and effective global governance system. Efforts to address climate change, ensure food security, and protect natural resources are being promoted in international forums. The country is also expanding the training and secondment of experts to UN agencies, strengthening its presence and contributing to global initiatives.

To achieve its goals, the Vietnamese government is seeking to strengthen inter-ministerial coordination and implement international commitments in line with the strategic direction set by the 13th National Congress.

With steadfast efforts and firm commitments, the country consistently upholds its role as a proactive and responsible member of the United Nations. Through its contributions to peacekeeping, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights, this Southeast Asian nation remains a reliable partner in fostering a peaceful, stable, and sustainable world.
