On December 19, Qatar Airways opened its first direct flight to central Da Nang city.  Few days later, on December 22, South Korea’s largest low-cost carrier Jeju Air launched a new direct route between Daegu and Da Nang that would operate seven flights per week.

The new route has taken the total flight number operated by Jeju Air between Vietnam and South Korea to 63 per week.

In mid-November, Swiss airline Edelweiss began new flight route from Zurich to Ho Chi Minh City and Air Asia kicked off flights connecting Kuala Lumpur and Phu Quoc island.

Vu The Phiet, general director of Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), told Tuoitre newspaper that in 2019 an additional three to five airlines will launch flights to Phu Quoc Airport in southern Vietnam.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAA), a total of 68 airlines from 25 countries and territories are operating in Vietnam’s aviation market, including four domestic airlines of Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific and Vasco.

In December, AirAsia announced its intention to set up a domestic airline in Vietnam together with Thien Minh Group, its local partner, scheduling to begin operation in August 2019.

Start-up carrier Bamboo Airways, with the backing of conglomerate FLC Group, would launch its first flight on December 27 after several delays.

In the first 11 months of 2018, Vietnam welcomed 14.1 million foreign holidaymakers, an increase of 21.3% year-on-year, according to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT).
