Hanoi takes actions for “Clean up the world” campaign

Hanoi encourages locals to use environmentally-friendly products, communicates messages and activities in response to the 2023 “Clean up the world” campaign.

The campaign to make the world cleaner, initiated by Australia, has been launched globally by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) since 1993 and held periodically in September every year. The campaign has so far attracted the participation of millions of people and more than 180 countries worldwide, becoming a worldwide community movement, contributing to raising public awareness and actions of all humanity towards environmental issues.

The Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment has issued an official dispatch guiding the activities to raise people’s awareness on environment protection to make Hanoi a greener, cleaner and more beautiful city.

The campaign is an opportunity to call on organizations, businesses, and individuals to join activities to improve and protect the environment, towards the goal of sustainable development.

With the theme "Joining hands to act for a cleaner world", this year’s campaign aims to encourage sustainable development, natural disaster mitigation, and climate change adaptation.

To achieve high results, the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment has recommended that departments and the People's Committees of districts to keep launching community movements, such as cleaning the environment, planting trees, restoring the environment in residential areas, collecting products made from plastic and non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Environmental protection education content has also been integrated in training programs to raise students' awareness and responsibility for environmental protection, creating a change in opinion of a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature.

Especially, Hanoi has focused on eliminating the ideology of pursuing immediate economic benefits while ignoring the responsibility to protect the environment, rewarding organizations and individuals with outstanding achievements in environmental protection.

The campaign “Clean up the world” aims to call on countries to jointly take actions to create changes to the global environment. This year’s message focuses on enhancing public awareness of the significance and their role in protecting the environment in socio-economic development. The event also highlights natural disaster mitigation, and climate change adaptation.

Vietnam has joined in the "Clean up the world" campaign under the auspices of the Australian embassy in Vietnam since 1994 and has received a great response from students and people from all walks of life.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has launched actions in response to the 2023 “Clean up the world” campaign to encourage the community to protect the environment, towards a green economy and sustainable development.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union Dinh Khac Dinh asked ministries and departments at all levels to keep encouraging community movements for environmental sanitation and improving the environment in urban and residential areas.

The 2023 “Clean up the world” campaign is an opportunity for the community to join hands to take responsibility for the environment, from small but meaningful actions, thereby actively contributing to building the future of the Earth, creating a clean environment and maintaining ecological balance for the sustainable development of humanity.

Functional agencies have launched community activities such as cleaning the environment in the neighborhood, planting trees, improving the environment in urban areas and residential areas with clear attention to lakes, rivers, and canals. Moreover, local authorities have carried out activities to raise the awareness of the public about their responsibilities in protecting the local environment, classifying solid waste at source, reducing waste disposal, increasing waste recycling.

The MoNRE has also sent a formal dispatch to the People’s Committees of all provinces and municipalities about activities in response to the campaign "Clean up the World" 2023. 

Via building models of collecting, classifying, and treating household waste at source, local authorities have attracted the participation of many rural population clusters, making a significant change in protecting the environment.

Functional forces deployed activities to clean beaches and the coastal regions, focusing on collecting non-degradable plastic waste and transporting it to places for recycling and treatment in line with regulations.

The local authorities have further boosted the campaign related to the green economy, circular economy, and environmental activities and renew the content and form of communication programs depending on technology platforms and target groups.

To late September, Vietnam has collected and treated more than 4,000 cubic meters of rubbish and over 12,000 tons of waste, and cleaned up nearly 200,000 meters of the sewerage system in cities.
