Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on March 23 for the Hague, the Netherlands, to attend the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit at the invitation of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The March 24-25 summit is expected to work out measures to increase nuclear security, reduce nuclear terrorism threats, and set future orientations.
This is the second time PM Dung has attended such a meeting as nuclear security and safety is the centrepiece of the whole world.
At the second Nuclear Security Summit in the Republic of Korea in 2012, PM Dung stressed disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons are the most important factors in minimizing dangers to nuclear security and safety.
However, he said that every nation has the rights to use nuclear energy and technology for peaceful purposes, and that differences on this issue must be resolved through peaceful means based on the UN Charter and international law, considering the legitimate interests of each nation.
Dung reiterated Vietnam’s determination to develop its nuclear power programme to meet the nation’s demand for energy security.
Vietnam has joined the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT) and is considering approving the Additional Protocol (AP) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Dung will have meetings with leaders of the participating countries to deepen understanding, and promote bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, investment, and atomic energy development for peaceful purposes.
After the event, PM Dung will visit Cuba and Haiti, demonstrating Vietnam’s desires to attach importance to developing cooperative ties with its traditional friends in Latin America.Other News
