The view was stressed by the SADC’s representatives during a press conference held by the embassies of three Southern African countries to Hanoi Angola, Mozambique and South Africa, which aimed to inform about the 27th celebration of the SADC's foundation as well as provide better knowledge of this community to Vietnamese people.

According to South African Ambassador to Vietnam and the Chairman of the SADC Ambassador Group to the country Mpetjane Lekgoro, the SADC is an inter-governmental organization to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth and socio-economic development, deeper co-operation and integration, good governance and durable peace and security among the regions.

The SADC comprises sixteen state members namely Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Lekgoro said that Vietnamese enterprises have had effective cooperation with some of the SADC member states in many fields so far including petroleum, telecommunication, processing industry, among others. Of the Southern African countries, Vietnam – South Africa trade reached over US$1 billion last year, of which, exports from the Southeast Asian country made up US$724 million. Vietnam’s biggest telecom carrier Viettel is investing in Mozambique through its subsidiary Movitel.

However, there is still a lot of development potential that the two sides have not utilized yet as the SADC is a regional economic community with the total population reaching some 280 million, of which the young and dynamic populations take the upper hand. The region also owns abundant natural resources and growing markets that may be a rich land for international investors, including Vietnam.

The representatives of SADC also wants to draw lessons from Vietnam’s experiences and success in developing its economy and reducing poverty.
