Strong Vietnam–US economic relations help boost bilateral comprehensive cooperation

The Vietnam – US comprehensive partnership has been growing in all spheres, particularly in trade and investment.

Strong Vietnam – US economic relations lay solid foundation and boost bilateral comprehensive cooperation in the coming time, according to Kurt Campbell, former US Assistant Secretary of State and current President of Asia Group.

US enterprises seek further support from the Vietnamese government to expand operations in the country, said Campbell at the meeting with Nguyen Van Binh, Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee’s Economic Commission on October 28. 

Campbell, along with representatives from US major corporations in finance, trade, defense and technologies, is on a trip in Vietnam to explore business opportunities. 

Binh said the Vietnam – US comprehensive partnership has been growing in all spheres, particularly in trade and investment. Bilateral trade turnover jumped 133-fold from US$450 million in 1996 to US$60 billion in 2018.

Binh stressed the Vietnamese government and the Community Party of Vietnam considered the US top partner of the country. 

According to Binh, the US business community has been playing a vital role facilitating bilateral relations and helping Vietnam realize its development objectives. 

Binh requested US enterprises to continue expanding business operations in Veitnam. 

In a separate meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Campbell stressed all members in the US delegation strongly support robust Vietnam – US relationship. 

Minh expected US investors to commit long-term businesses in the country, particularly in startup activities. 

Minh added Vietnam has stepped up efforts in balancing trade between the two countries, expecting greater bilateral trade relation. 

Vietnam is currently 27th largest export market and 16th trade partner of the US.
