Vietnam is willing to cooperate with North Korea for mutual benefits of the two countries' people, Phuc said in a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on March 1.

Phuc congratulated North Korea on the country’s achievements during the implementation of its five year national economic strategy 2016 – 2020, and believed that North Korea under the leadership of Kim would fulfill all economic objectives and becomes a prosperous country.

The Vietnamese PM said Vietnam also support joint-efforts for a peaceful and stable Korean Peninsula.

Following the conclusion of the North Korea – US second summit in Hanoi, Phuc hoped the two sides would continue to talk and resolve differences in a peaceful manner, while Vietnam wound continue to contribute actively to the process.

At the meeting, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he was impressed with Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and expected to take the relation with Vietnam to a new height.

Kim highly regarded Vietnam’s role and important status in the global stage and thanked the country for its warm reception and hospitality, especially Vietnam’s efforts to ensure the success of the North Korea – US second summit.

Vietnam and North Korea set up bilateral relations in 1950. The relationship was built up by North Korea’s founder and President Kim Il-sung (grandfather of incumbent leader Kim Jong Un) and Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh. Kim Il-sung visited Vietnam twice, in 1958 and 1964.

Pyongyang provided considerable support for Vietnam in the past, especially during the Vietnam War. In 1960s and 1970s, North Korea helped train hundreds of Vietnamese students. In return, Vietnam has supported the North Korean people in different ways, mainly through rice relief.
