Vietnam’s export of steel and cement increases

Steel export reaches 1.9 billion USD, while this number for cement is 430.6 million USD in 8 months of 2017, with an increase rate of 13.3% and 43% compared with the previous year respectively.

In 2017, cement production sector set an objective of exporting 17 million tons, however, the exported amount in the first 8 months reached more than 12 million tons.


Bangladesh and Philippines are the biggest exporting market of Vietnam for cement and clinker, in which, the Bangladesh market is on top with the export amount of 4.9 million tons and valued 144 million USD. The Philippines market ranked second, with 3.15 million tons and valued 141 million USD; while Taiwan is 661,000 tons, with value of 19.5 million USD.

According to the Chairman of Vietnam Cement Association Nguyen Quang Cung, cement export has risen to above 20% compared with the sector’s estimation in the context of fierce competition with cement corporations of neighbor countries and the trend of decreasing price for cement and clinker, which has lasted for the recent 2 years.

Song Lam Cement JSC has just put the Song Lam Cement factory (with 2 production chains, capacity of 4 million tons) into operation since October 2016, however, the production chains are overloaded due to high number of orders. Vice Director of Song Lam Cement JSC Do Thi Hang said, competition in cement market between Vietnam and neighbor countries are fierce, however, with experience of exporting cement in more than 10 years, the company has been ordered for long term with large quantity, ensure the full capacity of new factory. 

In the steel industry, with difficulties from protectionism policy from main import markets, but the export value of steel in recent 8 months has brought revenue of 1.8 billion USD, up 27% in term of quantity and 43% of value compared with the same period of 2016. According to Vietnam Steel Association (VSA), ASEAN has been the major export market of Vietnam in the last 8 months, with the export amount of 1.3 million tons, contributing to 58% of the total exported steels. One of the biggest contributor to the increase in quantity and export value is Hoa Phat Corporation JSC, with the increase in export of 9 times compared with last year. Statistics of Hoa Phat shows, 8 months of 2017, Hoa Phat exported 116,000 tons, while the previous year, the export number was 12,000 tons. Leaders of Hoa Phat said, since the last half of September, the export number is likely to increase, so the corporation is pushing the production capacity to serve the need of customers. According to VSA, the export potential of Vietnam’s steel in 2017 is very positive, as in forecast, China export of steel in 2017 may reduce, due to the increase of local demand to serve infrastructure projects.
