Youtube rival TikTok announces operations in Vietnam

TikTok became the world’s most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store in the first half of 2018 with an estimated 104 million downloads.

TikTok, a social media app for creating and sharing videos as well as live broadcasting developed by China’s Bytedance, has been officially introduced in Vietnam after becoming known for Vietnamese Internet users for a year.

Diep Que Anh, PR manager of TikTok in the Vietnamese market, said that TikTok Singapore has a team of more than 70 staff to support this market and the personnel will amount to hundreds to follow the growing number of users in Vietnam, she noted.

“Vietnam sees the fastest growth of TikTok users in the Southeast Asia after a year,” Anh said, adding that Vietnamese users spend average 28 minutes per day on watching this app.

Launched in September 2016, it is a leading short video platform in Asia and has extended to other parts of the world. Allowing users to create musical, dance, comedy, acting, lip-sync and other types of short videos in 15 seconds, the app has drawn more than 500 million global users across 150 countries.

It became the world’s most downloaded app on Apple’s App Store in the first half of 2018 with an estimated 104 million downloads, surpassing the downloads recorded by PUBG Mobile, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram in the same period.

Controversial remarks

TikTok appears as an app designed for the youth with lip-sync and teasing icons but it is not welcomed by adults.

Diep Que Anh said that the app is trying to diversify the content to approach more matured users.

The origin of TikTok remains controversial as The Telegraph and some other newspapers called Bytedance a Chinese tech firm, but Que Anh said that it’s hard to label it a Chinese startup as its headquarter is located in Los Angeles, the US and available in 150 markets.

Set up in 2012, Bytedance is marketed US$75 billion after receiving investment from SoftBank, KKR & Co, and General Atlantic. Bytedance’s value exceeds Uber to become the world’s most valuable startup.

In Vietnam, the most successful trend on TikTok has drawn more than 10,000 videos with 32 million views. There are more than 120,000 videos relating to the final of the AFF Cup 2018, catching nearly 55 million viewers.

However, the majority of Vietnamese netizens criticized this app, saying that it contains higgledy-piggledy content and many of them are not good for school students.
