At least 31 people died and nine others went missing in floods caused by torrential rains in the central localities, according to official statistics.

Affected localities include Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Kon Tum, and Gia Lai.
More than 243,000 houses have been submerged, collapsed or swept away meanwhile nearly 3,000 hectares of crops have been damaged.
Viet Nam is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Last weekend, a powerful storm, Haiyan, went along the country’s coast before hitting Quang Ninh province, killing 14 people, while 4 missing and 81 others injured.
On Monday, the country host the ASEM high-level meeting on disaster prevention and relief in response to climate change in the face of increasingly devastating and challenging calamities across the world.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh called on Asia and Europe to strengthen coordination and cooperation in policy and action in response to natural disasters.
He urged both sides to set up a network of research institutes and early warning systems among ASEM partners, between Asia and Europe, and with those of regional and international organizations.
Deputy Prime Minster, Foreign Minister Minh said only by joining hands to take bold actions today, can we be able to better cope with the threats posed by disasters in the future.
